    Preserving ancient craftsmanship

Each leather mosaic is meticulously hand-stitched by artisans in Tatarstan. Only a few dozen artisans remain who possess the skills to craft leather mosaics. Altari is taking practical measures to conserve ancient craftsmanship, committing at least 5% of annual sales to establish a new generation of Tatar mosaic craftsmen. Their contribution and assistance will be co-designed with artisans and their communities; this includes training, equipment and infrastructure.

The focal point of any Altari bag is its mosaic, a form of embroidery that has existed for over 1500 years. Despite its deep-rooted history and cultural significance, the leather mosaic, and those who have the skill to create it are steadily disappearing. Only a few dozen artisans in the Russian region of Tatarstan possess this ability today, passed down from one generation to the next across 15 centuries. Altari is proud to work with them.
